Jackie Stewart had
won three Grand Prix in Ken Tyrrell's Matra during the previous year, and it was no
surprise when the combination dominated this time. The Spanish GP brought up safety
concerns regarding the high aerodynamic wings. Both works Lotus,
driven by Graham Hill and Jochen Rindt,
crashed heavily after their wings collapsed due to the downforce they were generating. An
emergency meeting of the CSI at Monaco banned unrestricted wings with immediate effect.
Graham Hill won at Monaco for the fifth time, a record which would stand until Ayrton Senna's sixth victory in 1993. As so often before the
introduction of its chicanes, Monza provided the best race of the year, Jackie Stewart
winning a four car slip streaming battle to clinch the title. Four wheel drive was seen as
the next logical step in F1 design, and both Matra and Lotus introduced new cars at the
Dutch GP, with the McLaren version joining the grid for the
British GP. However, the technology proved to be an expensive distraction. With Ferrari and BRM both uncompetitive and Matra
taking a sabbatical from engine supply, the Ford DFV
won every round of the championship. |
