Despite having been announced in 1963, the introduction of new 3 litre engine
capacity rules found many teams far from ready. But as with the last major change of rules
in 1961, Ferrari was again prepared and so was favourite.
However, having won in Belgium the Italians lost their impetus when internal politics
forced their leading driver John Surtees to leave and join Cooper. Jack Brabham became the first man
to win the World Championship in a car of his own name with four successive victories. His
team exclusively used the new Holden/Repco engine, based on an aluminium stock block
Oldsmobile, which although not as powerful as other 3 litre units was reliable and quick
enough. Coventry Climax had withdrawn from F1 by the end of
1965, leaving the British teams looking for alternative power sources. Aside from Brabham,
Cooper arranged to use V12 Maserati engines which had been raced nine years previously. Bruce McLaren's new team experimented unsuccessfully with V8 from
both Ford and Serenissima, while others bored out old
engines to 2 litre capacity as a stop gap. It was with such a BRM
that Jackie Stewart won at Monaco. BRM eventually introduced
the unreliable and complicated H16 unit, which was essentially two 1500cc V8s mated
together. The only win for the engine was in the US GP and then not for the team. It
powered Jim Clark's Lotus 43 to his only win of the year. |
