Jim Clark, the man to beat for all but the
first year of the 1.5-litre Formula One, fittingly became World Champion for a second time
in the final year of the formula. Not only did he win six times, but he also won the
Indianapolis 500 at the third attempt. Once again British drivers dominated the series, Graham Hill completing a hat-trick of wins both in Monte Carlo -
which Clark missed due to Indy - and at Watkins Glen. The Italien GP was again the closest
race of the year, with the leading changing hands a record 42 times between four drivers,
before Hill's team-mate Jackie Stewart scored his maiden Grand
Prix victory. Richie Ginther won the closing Grand Prix of the
formula, held in Mexico City - not only his sole win, but also a first for Honda and for Goodyear tyres. |
